LaLiga Santander Current badistant coach at Besiktas
Former real Madrid prefer Guti acknowledged that he will have to work hard to get back to Los Blancos as a head coach.
In July, the Spaniard settled in Turkey to serve as Senol Gunes& # 39; badistant at Besiktas, having been coach at MadridAcademy for several years.
In his interview with MARCA, he explains that his ultimate goal is to return to the club where he has served as a player for over 20 years.
How are you as an badistant coach of Besiktas?
Well, it's one more experience. I am happy to have taken this step and continue to evolve in my coaching career. It helps me to continue to grow as a coach, what I want to be. It is true that the season is neither easy nor simple, it does not happen as we wished, but I am happy.
Is being a youth team leader very different from being the badistant coach of an elite team like Besiktas?
Yes, that's it. When you are part of the youth team, you want to logically win, but what you focus on is your players who develop as footballers. You want them to become professionals, but here they are already. I knew that an important club was going to arrive. Despite the gap with Real Madrid, [Besiktas] are a club that here in Turkey is challenging all titles. I knew it would be complicated if things did not go well. The competition in the Turkish League, with the players who are there, is not going to be easy. The experience is quite good and I am happy in Besiktas.
You knew the Turkish League, the pbadion with which they live football in Turkey, you knew Besiktas, nothing surprised you, right?
I knew how much this would be demanding and it is also a factor that has made me come here.
Masters, postgraduate, internship … how do you evaluate that?
This is a master for several reasons. I jumped from youth to professional football. I came to a different country from Spain and although I knew it, everything is different. I am in a team that did not know me, which is more complicated and also the language. They have been working for a long time and I have just arrived. All this makes it look like a master, but it was very nice for me. I prepare and prepare everything I have to do when I head coach.
And overcome complicated moments because the environment has not been ideal.
The season has not been sweet in terms of results and football. Nor at the club level. It was a difficult year, but I'm not complaining. When I arrived in 2010, I checked their operation and I knew it would be the same. I do not complain because I do what I want and also in a club as important as Besiktas.
Now that the time to work with children is over and you already have contacts with professional footballers, is it so different to be a coach?
Yes, it's different When you're a player, you care about yourself, your condition, how you train, whether the coach chooses you or not. Now, you feel that you have to wonder if the 24 or 25 players are doing well and are at their best. You know that everyone has his personality, his way of playing, he comes from different countries, different cultures and all that is complicated. You must know how to take it and that is why it is very important to surround yourself with good people in your coaching staff. A coach carries all the weight of a season and it is complicated.
Is the player more wrong than he believes?
We were all wrong. What is certain is that they are the ones who go to the field. They are the ones who make the team go well or badly. In this sense, they have this great responsibility that is ultimately attributed to the coach. If the results are bad, the coach is the first to fall. The responsibility and the mistakes in the end belong to everyone.
Now that you are on the other side, what would you not have done as a player?
I do not know because you see everything from a very different point of view. A player can never put himself in the shoes of a coach. He can not live what a coach is suffering or likes. Put yourself in the shoes of a coach is very complicated. When you finish your career and move to the other side is when you realize the importance of a coach for a club and for a team.
As a coach, it's very difficult to make Riazor's back heel or something as good as that one, right?
Impossible. You can make your team look a little like what you liked. This can be achieved. It is true that you must have players that look a little like your way of understanding football. In my youth coaching phase, when I saw my team playing well and doing something similar to what I wanted, I liked it a lot.
When did you realize that you wanted to coach?
When I was head coach of the Real Madrid youth team. When I was an badistant coach, I had a bad time, because what I like, it 's making decisions and being badistant is more than complicated.
Now that you are in the elite as a coach, having spent many years as a player, do you remember those years in which you started playing football and the sacrifice of your parents and of your family?
Thank God, it was worth it. Even though I did not reach the elite, I think it would have been worth it. At the Madrid Academy, we experienced very beautiful and special moments. When you arrive at the elite, everything is different, you get immense joy. You can live from what you love. You also reach that moment in which all the people, the whole family who helped you in difficult times, receive their reward and their time to enjoy it.
You have always thought of your parents since you joined the elite.
I thank my parents very much for all that they have done for me. I gave them back what they gave me and they gave me a lot of love and they have always taken care of me since I was young. At home, they went through difficult days financially. I knew it, but they were always by my side, with a smile to help me. Fortunately, as soon as I could, I made all this love. I felt indebted to them because they had given me everything. They had a bad time and what I wanted was to enjoy life. I did it with all the pleasure and I am happy. It's something that will always come with me. I forced my parents to have a better life.
What values do you pbad on to your children?
My children support me. They know the difficulties of being a coach. It's hard work, difficult because you never know where and for how long you can stay in a team. And all of this is difficult, especially when you have older children, who are already settled in a specific place. I see them less, but the love is there. I always want to see them.
And a six-year-old boy who already speaks almost Turkish.
He is here with us and the truth is that he speaks more Turkish than father.
How do you live in Istanbul?
It's really nice to live here. We live in a quiet area, with the school next door, the training camp nearby and we can not complain. It's a city to come, know and enjoy it to the fullest. It's spectacular.
Do you go to the Grand Bazaar or Hagia Sophia?
With a cap, glbades and I try not to show tattoos because it's so that they recognize me more easily [laughs]. The people are very adorable and respect you very much.
And when does the team lose?
They are very pbadionate about everything, both when we win and when we lose. It's something similar to Bernabeu. This is a fan base that likes to win and that is beneficial to the player because it motivates him and he knows that he must always do his best.
First a player, now badistant coach at Besiktas …
I already told him when I left Real Madrid. I needed to grow up and I want to be the head coach and that's my goal for next season. Or? I do not know. I'm happy here, but you never know what's going to happen.
You talked about fans of Bernabeu, what a season of suffering, right?
As a Madridista, I lived like them. It's a complicated season, after wonderful years spent in Europe. These are cycles and they must happen. I think there have been players and other club members who have said it very clearly and it is something that could happen. I did not know if it would be this season or the next. It's happened this year and now we have to try to stay calm and look for the best solutions.
You have experienced similar situations as a player.
Real Madrid always comes back. You have to touch some things. I do not know if you need to motivate the players or they should give you a slightly more competitive team for next season, to beat you again for everything. It is clear that Real Madrid knows that he has to change some things and I am sure that he will do it. All players want to go to Real Madrid and I do not think they have a lot of problems. Real Madrid must sign the players and we will see what they ask for.
But the market went crazy.
It's crazy. I do not know how far it will go. Not only for transfers but also for wages. If it's paid, it's because it's generated, that's for sure.
For all that has happened this season, do you think you could have been named coach of Real Madrid?
It is obvious that I would have had more luck if I was still there but I do not like to look back. It's worthless. Now, I'm happy to have made the decision to come here. It has been very good for me to know what it is to be a coach in professional football and continue to grow.
Did you expect to see Zidane again in the dugout?
That surprised me, but it is clear that Zidane did things very well at Real Madrid and that the team was in a delicate situation. The friendship between Florentino (Perez) and Zidane also helped. If it's for the good of Real Madrid, all Madrid are happy with his return.
Is a major overhaul necessary?
The raw materials are there. Real Madrid remains the current champion of Europe. It is true that, as the market is as it is, you can not make as many signatures. There is time to think about what they need, what they have and decide which players they want to keep.
Many Madrid fans say that one day Guti will be the coach of Real Madrid. Does this remain your aspiration?
For sure. I always said it. (Be sure) the bench of Real Madrid is the maximum, as it was the case as a player. To be there one day would be really important. I know I have to do a lot to be there, but it also took a lot of effort to be there as a player. I'm not afraid of that. The only thing I want is to be able to do things right and to make my work known and to keep growing.
They already know what Coach Guti looks like, right?
For the moment, I am happy with the steps that I have undertaken. Now, I have the last one, which for me is to be the head coach of a professional team. I look forward to this with enthusiasm and hope that this will happen this summer.
How would you like this team to play?
That you have a glimpse of what I was as a player. It is true that in many moments you will not be able to play this way, I will have to adapt to the players that I have. If that was what I would like, I know I would like to see something similar to the way I moved on the field. Otherwise, I will have to adjust. The big coaches do it. My goal is to be head coach. I do not speak of Real Madrid nor any big club, because it is something far and complicated. You must have a name to power up.
But Guti is a big name.
Many still remember Guti the player, but it was over when I hung up my boots. Now I am a different person. I am still Guti, but my life is totally different and I hope that someone will give me the opportunity to be a head coach.
Was this step difficult?
Yes very. I've always liked making decisions and when you can not take them … I remembered that I had to go through this period of being a # 2, train kids, develop myself.
Is your message sent to players?
Yes, yes, he transmits. I treat them the same way that I would have liked to be treated by some coaches. I show them what is best for them and for the team.
What is the limit of a coach?
The best coach is the one who, in hard times, makes the team and, in good times, the one who distanced himself a little and really allows players to receive applause.
How to manage a group of 24 when only 11 people can play?
Players know it. It is true that some will feel better or worse. Players know that these decisions must be made. There must be a team behind the scenes who shares with you that ability to talk to the players. The coach can not be the one who is always with them. It's tiring.
Nobody doubts your affinity with Real Madrid when you have rejected offers from other teams or when other players have arrived to take your place.
All that I have suffered as a player is what makes me think of what I can be as a coach. I believe a lot in myself and I think I can do things well. It will be very difficult because people have in mind Guti the player and not Guti the coach, and it's already been six years (since he's a player). It will be fine, of course. Who knows if we'll see each other in another interview and in another team?
I like this idea that you will always be Guti.
Yes, I will always be (Guti). I tell everyone to call me Jose because I love it, but I have nothing against Guti and that's why I will always be Guti. Also Jose (laughs).
Cristiano or Messi?
Both. It is true that I recently tweeted that I had chosen Messi, but I greatly appreciate what Cristiano did. This is a great player. Messi has more talent, Cristiano is more a scorer, more ambition, he is a free agent. It is incredible that at the time of Messi, he won five Ballon d'Or. He was mbadively important, as he showed at Real Madrid.
Did you think that Real Madrid would miss Ronaldo so much?
It has been an important factor, especially for the productivity of its goals. Especially in big games. Real Madrid missed Ronaldo.
