Eddie Osei-Nketia, the kiwi teenage sensation, has become Australia's fastest man after winning the men's 100m title at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney.

The 17-year-old from Scots College, he won the final with a time of 10.24 seconds to take first place in the senior men's division, adding to his New Zealand title won in Christchurch last month.

Osei-Nketia is the son of Gus Nketia, the New Zealand 100m record holder, who recorded a record time of 10.11 seconds at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

The Canberra speedster nearly broke his father's semifinal record with a time of 10.19 seconds – just 0.08 seconds off his father's record.

Osei-Nketia confessed that he was stunned to win the race, beating local favorite Rohan Browning.

"I could not believe it myself," he said.

"Last month, when my dad entered the openings, I was scared of the big names, but my dad told me to focus on my own run – and that's what I did. Did it. "

Osei-Nketia was born in Auckland before spending time in Canberra, but has since returned to New Zealand on a Scots College Scholarship.
