The two-day meeting on "DRR in Ghana: the future of our cities"
The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) reiterated Ghana's commitments to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
The Sendai Framework is a voluntary, non-binding, 15-year agreement recognizing that the state plays a key role in disaster risk reduction, but that this responsibility should be shared with other countries. other stakeholders.
According to Dr. Grace Bediako, Executive Director of the NDPC, a signatory to the Sendai Framework for DRR, Ghana was committed to working effectively towards disaster risk reduction and building resilience to disasters.
She noted that 25 goals related to disaster risk reduction were included in 10 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), firmly establishing the role of disaster risk reduction as an essential development strategy.
Dr. Bediako said this at a high-level consultation meeting on DRR in Accra.
The two-day meeting, which took place on the theme "Disaster Risk Reduction in Ghana: The Future of Our Cities", created a platform for stakeholders to discuss the future of the world. state of disaster risk reduction in Ghana, and presented major strategies for meeting Ghana's DRR Framework obligations.
Mr. Bediako said the Sendai Framework aimed to significantly reduce disaster risk and loss of life, livelihoods and health, as well as economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental badets.
She said that the first progress report on the Sendai Framework would be published in 2019 and that Member States should provide an update on the status of implementation.
She noted that, at the same time, countries, including Ghana, that were conducting voluntary national reviews on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2019 needed to take stock of DRR efforts at national and sub-national levels. national.
The Director-General said that Ghana had taken the first step by integrating both disaster risk reduction and resilience building into policies, plans, programs and budgets at all levels.
She hoped that the outcome of the meeting would be part of Ghana's voluntary review report on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Mr. Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, Director General of the National Development Management Organization (NADMO), said the theme of the framework was "Strengthening the resilience of nations and communities to disasters". and priority areas the substantial reduction of disaster risks and losses at the global, regional, national and community levels.
Mr. Agyemang-Prempeh called on disaster risk ambbadadors to reaffirm their efforts to reduce disasters to the minimum, if not all, as NADMO was responsible for leading the coordination of implementation of the Sendai Framework.
