Stakeholder meeting on stalemate resolution
The deputy of Efutu, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has questioned the decision of the board of directors of the University of Winneba Education (UEW) to only reinstate only three of the speakers who had been fired.
According to him, the board showed selectivity in implementing the consensus reached by the stakeholders at a meeting to resolve the stalemate that led to the closure of the school on March 4th.
The MP told reporters on Friday that the stakeholder meeting had agreed that all lecturers dismissed or dismissed would be reinstated, and that others would be compensated.
On April 3, the council reinstated only Professor Ephraim Avea Nsoh, director of the Language Teaching College in Ajumako, Dr. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, local president of UTTAG, and Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong.
Their dismissal triggered a series of protests that escalated on March 14, when police fired tear gas and warning shots to disperse students who were demanding the reinstatement of their teachers.
Several university properties were destroyed, which prompted the Central Region Security Council to announce the closure of the school's Ajumako and Winneba campuses to protect lives and properties.
UTAG had stated that at least 24 staff members from various categories had been fired by the board.
A statement issued on April 3 by the Board of Governors announcing the reinstatement of the three officers described the decision as a reconciler and indicated that the three had been pardoned for the offenses on which they had been fired.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin, however, expressed surprise at the fact that the agreement reached was not fully implemented.
"Up to now, the three people who were reinstated, as far as I know, this was not the opinion, the consensus we all reached … The general agreement what we all had was that all affected people would be reintegrated, "he said.
"The three reinstated did not correspond to the consensus we all reached," he repeated.
He therefore asked that what was agreed at the stakeholder meeting be implemented to the letter by reinstating all the speakers involved.
