Mayor Accra The Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah

Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, did not provide the infrastructure needed to clean up Accra, said Accra Mayor Mohammed Adjei Sowah.

According to Mr Sowah, although all the governments have tried to clean up the capital, these efforts were only superficial and did not actually offer any advantage due to lack of infrastructure.

He noted that without the proper infrastructure in place, no effort will be made to maintain the clean capital.

The mayor, however, said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on all the bademblies to work to provide the necessary infrastructure to deal with the waste.

Speaking at the Ghana Yensom broadcast on Accra100.5FM organized by Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Monday, April 8, 2019, Mr Sowah said: "I was driving into town when the rains started yesterday. . I was in town all night and we also went after the rain. "

"We had infrastructure problems. All the governments of Kwame Nkrumah have tried to make Accra clean, in one way or another. Some said 100 days, others went to the gutters to show that the city could be cleaned. "

"But all successive governments have failed in the provision of infrastructure. If the infrastructure is not there, it will be difficult to stop the problem. "

"For example, if you do waste management, where are your transfer stations? How is your landfill site? Do you have the necessary equipment to collect the waste? "

"If you do not have these things, it does not matter which cosmetics – declaring a 100-day cleansing exercise – you'll be exposed tomorrow."

"Some of the drains built since the 1960s have not been rebuilt. So these are some of the things that the current chair, Nana Akufo-Addo, is asking us to focus on. Providing these things takes a little time, so we appeal to the people of Accra to be patient with us. "
