The Minority Committee on Public Works and Housing criticizes the government for failing to release funds for dredging large drains in the capital, Accra.

According to Sampson Ahi, a member of the committee rankings, the Department of Public Works and Housing is complaining about the possibility of loosing the drains due to the inability of the Department of Finance to release funds to this end.

"The committee met with the minister and she complained that they were trying to get kick-off certificates from the Ministry of Finance so they could undertake the de-inking of large drainage in Accra," said Ahi. to Kwetey Nartey, from Joy News.

He also accused the government of the recent drainage situation, saying that "before [NDC] left the office, we hired Dredge Masters [company] major removals in Accra, but when the government arrived, they did not take up the whole concept.

"If they had continued, I'm sure we would have had some improvements in drainage systems in Accra, but they ended the contract," he said.

He wants the government to release urgently all the money required by the Department of Public Works and Housing so that it can flirt the big drains to allow the free flow of water.

His comments come after the confirmation of the death of at least three people in Accra after the heavy rain Sunday evening.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), which confirmed the deaths at Joy News, said the deaths occurred in different parts of the capital.

Archibald Cobbinah, Regional Director of NADMO for Greater Accra, said that one death had been recorded at Awudome and another at Avenor.

"A lady was also electrocuted and was rushed to the hospital but the information I have this morning is that she has pbaded," Cobbinah said.

He added that a woman and her baby have also disappeared and that their research team has not yet located them.

The rain of Sunday night left parts of the city, including Kaneshie, Dzorwulu and Kwame Nkrumah Circle flooded.
