Sudanese soldiers are reported to be protecting protesters as thousands of anti-government demonstrators gather in front of the army headquarters in central Khartoum. Witnesses and activists said riot police and secret service personnel had charged demonstrators with pickups while firing tear gas and firing warnings. Small but sustained protests have been staged regularly since December, when the government tried to raise bread prices. The 40 million people of Sudan are suffering from a severe economic crisis caused in part by years of US sanctions and partly by the loss of oil revenues since the secession of Southern Sudan in 2011. The protests are are subsequently turned against Omar al-Bashir, former army general who came to power during a military coup in 1989
