Edmonton Oilers and Wayne Gretzky have the Boston Bruins on the verge of elimination. It would be the Oilers' fourth Stanley Cup in five years, and they've just tied for three with a bit of play time.
And then the power goes off.
In the end, you need it to play a hockey game, especially if you want to broadcast it. And since this is potentially the last game of the NHL season, they really wanted to broadcast it. As in most sports, timing is important. This happened in May, which meant it was warmer than ice, and that fog was already a problem as long as they were still under tension. So when there was a power outage in the Garden, as well as in the surrounding blocks, the league was not very sure when it could resume the match.
This became even more problematic as the Celtics had to play a playoff game in the coming days. So, instead of finding a neutral site, the NHL just did what was most logical for them and for their constitution: they claimed that the fourth match was not a thing and they went straight to the fifth match at Edmonton.
