PARIS (Reuters) – South Africa has detected an outbreak of African swine fever on a farm in the North West Province, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said Wednesday in Paris. quoting a report from the South African Ministry of Agriculture.
The outbreak killed 32 of 36 pigs from a herd on a farm in Ditsobotla district and the remaining animals were slaughtered, the report said.
The outbreak has occurred outside of South Africa's control zone and could be linked to contact with wildlife, the report says.
The disease is incurable in pigs but harmless to humans. It has spread to China since last year, causing significant losses to the world's largest herd of pigs. [nB9N219036]
