Nicknamed "the closing season", the Ministry of Fisheries had banned the preservation of certain species of fish, such as mackerel, anchovies and other endangered species in the country's waters due to poor fishing practices. .
The ministry also explained that it would generally allow fish, in general, to reproduce, thus increasing their stock and maintaining an exceptional harvest for fishermen.
The research cited by the ministry last year argues that the period from August to September is the best time for fish to reproduce in greater numbers; disrupting the reproductive cycle would mean a depletion of fish stocks, as even fry are trapped by fishermen during what they call their exceptional season. is in August and September.
Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Minister of Fisheries, announced at a press conference in Accra, after extensive consultation and stakeholder engagement, that May 15 and June 15 had been agreed as the period during which the inshore and artisbad fishermen had to make their closing season.
The industrial trawlers, she added, also agreed to do theirs from 1 August to 30 September, the tuna sector having already experienced a period of closure from 1 January to the end of February.
The low season law was pbaded in 2002 and it is mandatory for the fishing industry to respect it.
