NEW YORK (AP) – A civil rights lawyer said opponents were preparing a lawsuit this week against the New York order demanding that all residents of a highly orthodox Jewish neighborhood be vaccinated against measles.
Attorney Michael Sussman said on Wednesday that the city exceeded its authority by threatening to fine residents of four Brooklyn postcodes if they refused to vaccinate their children.
Sussman also represented a group of parents in Rockland County, a suburb, who challenged the county executive's ruling banning unvaccinated children from accessing indoor public spaces. A state judge sided with the parents and issued a preliminary injunction against the emergency order.
Mayor Bill de Blasio is confident that the New York Vaccination Order will survive any legal challenge.
