Kevin Magnussen says Haas has learned some "interesting" lessons from the Bahrain Formula One test, which he thinks he was "lucky" to have immediately after his miserable Grand Prix.
Magnussen lamented a "hopeless" race in Bahrain in which he finished off points, qualifying sixth and at hand from Max Verstappen's Red Bull.
The two-day test on the Sakhir circuit the week after the race allowed Haas to immediately determine what was wrong.
"Spend a bad weekend while we have a test right after that is a little lucky, I suppose," said Magnussen, at the request of Autosport if Haas understood his problems.
"We were able to reproduce it and learn directly the problems we had on the same track and a few days later.
"I think we found some interesting things that could be reasons.
"I do not think it's just a thing, I think it's a combination of things that went wrong and that were not in the window, which often happens when you have a bad week. -end, unless you break something in the car.
"It was good to do this test and it seems that the team found some interesting things.
"Hope we can be better if we find a similar situation."
Magnussen was a duck sitting in straight lines in Bahrain, where a set of devices at the top support made the Haas pilots vulnerable.
The Dane explained that Haas did not think he needed the wing for this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix.
"We just did not have this lower package, a medium support," he said. "We did not have it.
"We have it this weekend, but it was not ready, I did not expect to need it that much.
"It was ok in qualifying because you have DRS and that difference becomes less important than racing when you run without DRS and you suddenly need a lot more efficiency."
Adding a third DRS zone would not have helped to solve this problem, although Magnussen conceded that it was more than just excessive support.
"In the end, our car was too advanced for a ride," he said.
"In terms of support, tire management, all the settings of the car probably went wrong during a long stay."
"It was very difficult, but as I said, I think we found some interesting things in the test." We know that the car is good, she qualified sixth Saturday.
"It was bad Sunday, but it can only be tires and some sort of editing."
His teammate Romain Grosjean also said that the team had found some "interesting" editing parameters that the team should have applied in the race.
"You should not qualify twice in the top 10 if you do not have a fast car," he said.
"Right now, we need some luck on our part and make sure we are going through the race without incident or problem."
