Army tanks rolled through the streets of Khartoum and the fate of President Omar al-Bashir was uncertain, with military and government sources indicating that the beleaguered leader had been removed from office.
The Sudanese army is expected to make "an important announcement," state media reported on Thursday after months of protests against Bashir.
"The Sudanese army will soon release an important statement, wait for it," said a television presenter without giving more details.
Thousands of people invaded the streets of the capital as they waited hours before the announcement.
At least two army tanks, one of which was topped by jubilant protesters, crossed the capital.

Witnesses reported gunfire near the headquarters of the army, at the center of six days of a provocative sit-in.
The army headquarters also houses the official residence of Bashir and the Ministry of Defense.
The unrest erupted in December when protests over rising bread prices erupted. They grew to become the biggest challenge yet to Bashir's 30-year rule.
Crowds of protesters spent five nights in the sprawling complex, singing and dancing to revolutionary songs.
Hiba Morgan of Al Jazeera, reporting from the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, said that there was a strong security presence on the city's main roads.
"There are many military trucks around the capital and main streets of the city.Most roads have been blocked, especially those leading to Army HQ." Some roads have been opened for protesters who participated in, "said Morgan.
"People are extremely happy even before the army makes an announcement, people are celebrating and flocking to the sit-in area, and the protesters say they are very confident in Bashir's resignation," said Morgan.
The group responsible for the nationwide protests urged residents of the capital to gather in front of the headquarters of the army.
"We call our people from the other side of the capital and the Khartoum region to go immediately to the sit-in area and not to leave before the publication of our next statement," he said. the Sudanese Association of Professionals.
The group also said that he would not accept that a military government succeeds President Bashir.
