Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal said Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt should snub Liverpool in favor of a move to Barcelona or Manchester City.
De Ligt is one of the most promising hopefuls in European football after baduming the captaincy in Ajax and consolidating his place in the back of his club – and that of the Dutch team.
19 years oldThe performances of the season have led to him being bound with Liverpool, where he could join the international partner Virgil van Dijk.
Manchester City has also been mentioned as a potential contender, but the champion of Spain, Barcelona, is the most likely destination for the central defender when he leaves Amsterdam in the summer.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport, Van Gaal said his compatriot should exclude Liverpool from the photo this summer and focus on City and Barcelona.
"If I had the chance, I would go to Barcelona," said the 67-year-old. "They have central defenders who are not very good, so he will play there. Or would I go to Manchester City.
"I do not think central defenders are so good, so he'll play there too."
De Ligt, who has played 46 times in all competitions for Ajax this season, was part of the team that drew 1-1 against Juventus on Wednesday in the first leg of their quarter-final of the Champions League.
