Haruna Iddrisu, leader of the minority, argued, however, that militancy was a matter of serious national importance and should not be rushed into the House.

"I understand that the President is in a hurry to solve the problem, but vigilance goes beyond the two largest political parties – the NDC and the NPP – and so there must be a much broader stakeholder consultation on this issue," he said. said Iddrisu.

Inussah Fuseini, a member of the Constitution, a member of Parliament's Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, agrees.

He said that a consensus should be built on how to manage vigilance instead of hastily pbading a bill through Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament, Aaron Mike Ocquaye, however, referred the bill back to the appropriate committee so that it determines whether or not it should be dealt with urgently.

What motivated the addition?

President Nana Akufo-Addo promised during her State of the Nation address in February, to face the threat of vigilance.

He has asked the two largest parties, the NDC and the NPP, who have been guilty of acts of political violence, to meet and dissolve self-defense groups.

"If the voluntary dissolution by the parties failed, I would take legislative action in this area." The president made headlines with his statement, which sparked a thunderous applause from MPs.
