Microsoft has now removed the update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 released on Tuesday for the usual patch day for some users. Users who have installed Sophos Endpoint Security have previously reported huge problems. But they seem not to be alone – the problem also seems to affect Avast.
Already yesterday, because of problems with Sophos Endpoint Security, we included a corresponding note in the new updates. During the process, users indicated that they could not restart regularly after the update. The calculator was partially suspended without an error message or could not start. However, the magnitude of the problem was not yet clear. Microsoft has now pulled the handbrake.
Avast confirms the error
Microsoft has now blocked updates for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users with the Sophos security solution. The problems with Avast are currently illegible at Microsoft, but Avast itself has issued a statement that resembles the same problem as Sophos.
The group has now updated their article in the knowledge base and added the problem to the list of known bugs. There, you can now read that the update is now blocked by users as a precaution.
Sophos has already solved the problems and reported that it affects users of Sophos Endpoint Security and Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2. You are now working with the Windows team on a solution.
Known bugs:
- Microsoft and Sophos have identified a problem on devices where Sophos Endpoint Protection is installed and managed by Sophos Central or Sophos Enterprise Console (SEC), which can cause the system to freeze or hang after restarting this update.
- Microsoft has temporarily excluded devices from receiving this update when Sophos Endpoint is installed until a solution is available. For more information, see the Sophos support article.
However, those who have already installed the updates can use a solution published by AskWoody. You must uninstall the update and deactivate the security solutions as soon as possible. Starting in safe mode is still possible, so you can remove the update again.
