How luxurious can a hotel be?
I was determined to find the answer to this question during a recent trip to Dubai. I had planned to stay at two reputable hotels in Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts, a chain of state-owned luxury hotels in Dubai.
The first was the Burj Al Arab, a $ 1 billion hotel in the shape of an Arab dhow sailboat. Last year, it was named the world's best hotel by the Telegraph's ULTRA Awards and has been awarded a five-star award by the Forbes Travel Guide. When it opened, a reporter was so in love with the Burj that she cried out that it had to be a seven-star hotel, a note that did not exist.

The second was the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, a neighboring wave-shaped family-run property. It was renovated last year with a new entrance hall, rooms and restaurants.
I thought that my experience in both cases would be pretty much the same: a luxurious luxury.
