The Director General of the Ghana Education Service announced reforms of the current education system, including the replacement of the existing primary education program and the introduction of new uniforms for lower secondary education. [JHS] students.
Sending to the press on Thursday, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa said that introducing the school uniform for JHS students was a psychological strategy aimed at ensuring that students see each other. as part of the second cycle education system rather than the JHS.
"When you go to other countries and you finish primary school, you go to high school right away; Lower secondary or upper secondary education is part of the overall secondary education.
"In our case, our structure is such that JHS students are part of the primary school. So, they tend to see themselves as elementary students [pupils] but the idea of introducing these uniforms is to let them consider themselves high school students, "he told reporters.
Expressing in laudatory terms in the new curriculum for primary schools, Opoku-Amankwa said the reform was in line with international best practices, which require a review every five years.
"A key element of the new program is the introduction of a national badessment exam in grades two, four and six," he said.
This will replace the status quo whereby students are badessed nationally upon examination of the basic education certificate.
The existing program has been criticized for placing a great deal of emphasis on the preparation of learners for pbading exams rather than for the actual acquisition of knowledge.
"The other problems of the existing program include the overload of content and the inability of the evaluation system, in the absence of sufficient data, to contribute to the improvement of teaching and learning.
"Indeed, the current landscape in terms of learning outcomes is not encouraging," Opoku told Amankwa to the press.
The new curriculum: main features.
1. In kindergarten, the number of learning domains must be reduced from seven (7) to four (4), integrated into themes.
2. At the primary and lower levels, the number of subjects remains the same. However, there will be fewer concepts and a deeper treatment of the concept in each subject. In addition, the focus is more on literacy and numeracy.
3. Introduction of a curriculum based on standards. This means that at each stage of the school, a student must demonstrate an understanding and mastery of the knowledge and skills that he is expected to learn as he progresses through his studies.
5. The history of Ghana will be compulsory for every child from the first to the sixth grade of primary school.
Plan for implementation at the national level
Train a core of 150 master trainers nationwide on the new curriculum.
2. Master trainers will in turn train 3,900 district and regional trainers.
3. Approximately 152,000 kg and primary school teachers will be trained throughout the country by the master, regional and district trainers.
4. There will be ongoing professional development through the creation of learning communities for teachers to enable them to share ideas and experiences.

Presidents hint at reforms in SONA
But it was Nana Addo DanKwa Akufo-Addo, president, who alluded to the new agenda in her third State of the Nation address to Parliament in February 2019.
The President stated that the new program will put the accent to make "the Ghanaian child a confident, innovative, creative, digital literate, complete and patriotic citizen".
According to him, mathematics, science, reading, writing and creativity will be at the heart of the new curriculum.
The president said that poverty should not be used as an excuse for a child not to reach his full potential.
