CThe opening of the Spanish legislative elections begins on Friday with charges of political espionage described as "Watergate".
Last month, the Spanish judiciary opened an investigation into an alleged conspiracy between the secret police and the former conservative government led by Mariano Rajoy in an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the left-wing Podemos party founded in 2014.
On April 1, the Spanish Socialist Administration claimed to have disabled the so-called "patriotic brigade" of former police officers.
"Sewers do not exist anymore," Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said.
But Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has since said that his campaign against his party was not over when the more ideologically aligned Socialist Prime Minister came to power in June.
Last weekend, Alberto Pozas, press secretary of Mr. Sánchez, was summoned by a judge about the theft of mobile phone data from the former badistant of Mr. Iglesias.
The phone was stolen in November 2015, a few weeks before the first general election in which Podemos participated, while Mr Pozas was editor of a sensationalist weekly now gone, Interviú.
Investigators found data on the mobile phone among the records of former police officer José Manuel Villarejo, jailed since 2017, while a court was examining his alleged role as a leading member of the "patriotic brigade" .
