Brown, meanwhile, was focused on "how lonely" she looked, but also noted "how lovingly she talked about her boys," Prince William and Prince Harry, aged 15 and 12, respectively. .

Wintour remembered that Diana had said that the royal family was ill at ease with the media – a stark contrast to the behavior of the Princess of Wales against them.

"I think her popularity was due to the fact that Princess Diana was really so good with the media and listening to them and welcomed them rather than taking a step back," said Wintour. "In a way, she was certainly the first person in the royal family to understand the benefits of this."

At another point in her interview with Brown, Wintour explained how Diana's daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle, was moving away from tradition and "truly bringing modernity to the royal family in an inspiring way."
