BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Belgium's match between Standard Liege and Anderlecht was dropped on Friday. Half an hour had pbaded after Anderlecht's supporters had launched flares and smoked bombs on the ground.
Standard led 2-0 to Liège when the referee dropped the match after 32 minutes. The players had already been forced to leave the field twice before.
"The match was definitely stopped because of the behavior of RSC Anderlecht fans," said Standard in a tweet.
The Belgian first division said it regretted the premature end of the match and that this would result in penalties as well as an investigation by federal prosecutors.
According to the Belgian rules, sanctions may include the loss of a 5-0 match, a fine and the possibility of having to play matches without the presence of his supporters.
Anderlecht had already lost all three previous matches in the playoffs and his supporters expressed their disappointment last weekend after a 2-1 home defeat against Antwerp, calling on the president to step down. Some supporters also clashed with the police.
The Brussels club said on Twitter that it was regretting what had happened on Friday.
"The board of directors of RSC Anderlecht strongly condemns tonight's behavior, which is absolutely intolerable for football," the club said.
