Eugene Labor Eugene Korletey, Chief Labor Officer

The director of labor, Eugene Korletey, called GCB Bank's management to a meeting following the dismissal of some 164 bank staff members.

The purpose of the meeting is to determine the nature of the dismissals of former employees of the former UT and Capital banks who were absorbed by GCB following the purchase and takeover of the two banks by GCB.

No explanation

According to some of the workers, who did not want to be named, the termination came without notice or explanation.

The injured workers have since enlisted the services of a labor consultant, Mr. Seth Ablosu, to lead them in discussions with the management of the GCB Bank.

However, two meetings between the bank and the consultant, scheduled for Tuesday, March 12 and Thursday, March 21, 2019, were unsuccessful because the bank did not acknowledge receipt of communication regarding the proposed meetings.

Blues ending

The consultant therefore referred the case to the person in charge of the work at the end of which the parties were summoned.

In a letter from the consultant detailing some of the issues raised by the bank's action and addressed to the Director General of Labor, she said: ensure transparent transfer of customer records and transaction details to ensure the success of the transaction. 39, exercise of integration ".

Clarify the termination

When contacted, the Labor Authority confirmed the invitation of both parties to discuss the matter.

He stated that the case fell within the competence of the Department of Labor as it was not a dispute but to clarify the nature of the termination of the staff mandates.

"If there is redundancy, we have to ask the parties to negotiate on the issues," he told the Daily Graphic.

Under section 30 of the 2003 Labor Act, termination of employment does not affect leave entitlements earned by staff.

It is also stated in this article that, in case of termination of employment of a worker, he is entitled to an annual holiday proportional to the period of service of the calendar year.

A dismissed worker must not be deprived of any subsidy or compensation to which he is entitled, including a notice allowance.

The context

In August 2017, the Bank of Ghana (BG) approved a purchase and badumption transaction with Bank GCB, which transferred all deposits and certain badets of UT Bank Limited and Capital Bank Limited to GCB Bank Limited.

The BoG added that the banking licenses of the two banks had been revoked as a result of a serious depreciation of their capital.

"All employees in the meantime will become employees of GCB Bank, and the latter will negotiate the terms of their contract," the BoG said in a statement.
