A violent cyclone that hit Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe last month is expected to cost the three countries more than $ 2 billion, the World Bank said.
According to early estimates, the Idai cyclone would cost $ 2 billion "for impacts on infrastructure and livelihoods," the World Bank said in a statement at the end of a meeting in Washington on Thursday.
"To date, about 3 million people have been affected, with almost total damage in the most affected areas," he said.
On March 14, Idai hit the port city of Beira, Mozambique, and then proceeded west to Zimbabwe.
In Mozambique alone, more than 600 people have died out of a million and a half affected. About 344 were killed in Zimbabwe. Southern Malawi was also drowned in heavy rainfall during an earlier phase of the storm, killing 59 people.
The global lender said the cyclone had damaged the infrastructure corridor connecting the Mozambican port of Beira to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, "disrupting regional trade and supply of fuel, wheat and other goods".
The UN has appealed for donations of $ 282 million to fund emergency badistance for the next three months.
The World Bank has called for "global collaboration" as recovery and reconstruction begin for the poor and vulnerable "in the face of climate risks and disasters".
