Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, Minister of Education
The branch of the University of Ghana (UG) of the Higher Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) urged the government and the Student Loan Trust Fund to settle all arrears of student loans from here a week.
According to the group, not doing so will lead to "animated actions in the coming days".
A statement signed by the group's president, Ayikwei Armah Ayitey, and the secretary-general, John Andrew Richardson, published in Accra last Wednesday, expressed his dissatisfaction at the delay in the disbursement of student loans for the 2018 academic year. 2019. .
According to the release, the loan fund was created to serve as a responsible vehicle to provide equal funding for higher education in order to alleviate the financial difficulties faced by students.
Delay in disbursement
"It is, however, instructive to point out that the fund has become a wobbly vehicle endangering the academic life of innocent Ghanaian students who rely on it to ease their financial burden," the statement said.
He said that recently, fund managers did not pay the loan amounts to eligible students two weeks after the start of each semester, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the fund.
"In several follow-ups to determine the real challenges that required the delays, our team was confronted with well-repeated fairy tales that can not meet the criterion of intelligible reasoning," the statement added.
Unfair treatment
He added that the government had committed resources for the payment of allowances to other higher education students in the same sector while others had been neglected.
TEIN warned that such repeated delays in loan payments would no longer be tolerated by students across the country, resulting in a one-week ultimatum.
"We also wish to indicate and reiterate that any action taken by the government or fund managers in response to our appeal and not adequately responding to the issues raised must be rejected and subject to many spiritual actions in the next few days, "TEIN pointed out.
