Scientists at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, have discovered that certain metals, under certain conditions, may be in a new state of aggregation, combining the solid and liquid phases. It looks like a sponge containing water.

The researchers simulated the behavior of 20,000 potbadium atoms under extreme conditions characterized by high pressure and temperature. It turned out that the two bonded atoms form a crystal lattice. The chemical bond between the atoms of a network remains strong, which helps maintain the solid state during heating. Another part of the potbadium melts and becomes fluid.

It is shown that under high pressure conditions (2-4 GPA) potbadium atoms are organized in a complex structure. Four nuclear tubes are in the corner of the square, a tube is placed in the middle and they are all connected by chains of atoms. When heated to 400-800 degrees Kelvin (126-526 degrees Celsius), there is a transition process in which the chain collapses (chain melting transition) and produces a liquid. The new global state is called phase with fused chains (chain fused phase). This is not transitory, for example, melting ice at zero degrees Celsius.

Scientists believe that the phase of molten chains can occur in different substances, including sodium and bismuth. However, the necessary conditions may be different from those required for potbadium. The results of the study can help the development of new types of materials.
