Health authorities on the Zamboanga Peninsula reported a doubling of dengue cases in the first months of 2019.
The Department of Health in Region 9 (DOH-9) has recorded 2,577 dengue cases since January, double the 1,113 cases recorded last year.
In addition, 20 deaths were seen.
The city of Zamboanga has recorded 986 dengue cases, the highest in the region. Next comes Zamboanga del Norte, 663 cases; Zamboanga del Sur, 425; Zamboanga Sibugay, 382; and Isabela City, Basilan, 121.
According to the regional coordinator of the Aedes vector disease program in the region, one of the factors contributing to the high number of dengue cases is the El Niño weather phenomenon.
Nationwide, from January 1st to March 30th55,976 cumulative cases with 227 deaths were reported in the Philippines. This compares with 31,247 cases with 168 deaths reported during the same period last year.
