Internet technology giant Google has officially opened its artificial intelligence research center in Ghana with high hopes of finding solutions to Africa's problems.

Artificial intelligence is a field of computer science that focuses on creating intelligent machines that work and react like humans. This helps to find solutions to real world problems. This can help people focus on what's relevant and find new ways to solve problems in almost every imaginable area, such as AI, by helping pathologists to detect cancer cells on slides , advising farmers on how to solve the problems of their crops and helping manufacturers to detect equipment breakdowns. .

Google is optimistic: the lab installed in this West African country – the first in Africa – will transform lives by providing tailor-made solutions to the continent's problems, including natural disasters.

"Africa has many challenges where the use of AI could be beneficial, sometimes even more than in other places," said Moustapha Cisse, director of Google AI in Accra, at the Daily Mail GH at the official opening of the center in Accra, capital of Ghana.

Machine Learning software researchers and engineers use the AI Center to feed the system into local AI content. Google is collaborating with stakeholders such as universities and start-ups to improve the development of AI on the continent.

Cisse believes this is an opportunity for local scholars and educational institutions across the continent to collectively address the challenges facing the continent.

"Being here to attract an international team of researchers and engineers allows us to educate decision makers so that they understand better the importance of this technology. I hope that they will invest more in AI education across Africa and will also promote its application and effectiveness. in different domains.

"These opportunities and this awareness are the first step. We are now researching here and look forward to collaborating with other researchers working throughout Africa to address some of these challenging and challenging challenges and hopefully make the difference, "said Dr. Senegalese expert in AI.

Cisse is positive. Africa should make the most of artificial intelligence, while inviting young people to seize opportunities in the technological space.

"I firmly believe that AI has a bright future in Africa," he said, adding, "Africa has a lot to give to AI and AI has much to give to Africa. We are the youngest continent on this planet. It is also the fastest growing population, the challenges are enormous and artificial intelligence has a huge role to play. This type of technology will speed up various relevant sciences. I believe that the future of AI lies mainly here in Africa. "

"We just need to make sure the right education and opportunities are in place. That's why Google sponsors many of these young people for their degrees and their masters to help them develop a new generation of artificial intelligence developers, "he said.

The AI laboratory in Accra has about 10 people from more than 12 different countries, including Senegal, Uganda, United States, Israel, Nigeria, Ireland, Canada and the United Kingdom. Other artificial intelligence centers are based in Paris, Zurich, Tokyo, Beijing, Montreal, Toronto, Seattle, Cambridge / Boston, Tel Aviv / Haifa, New York and San Franciso.
