Galaxy A80: Samsung has figured it out and reinvented the smartphone's camera

The camera of this smartphone has the hand. Literally.

Samsung beats back four times and brings the most exciting mobile camera of the year

Samsung has unveiled four new smartphones designed to appeal to everyone from fox-fancy to technology enthusiast.

Many Swiss swear for years on the expensive Samsung Galaxy S smartphones in the series. Currently, the new models of the Galaxy A cheaper series are almost interesting.

Samsung announced yesterday four new A models, priced between 200 and 650 francs for almost all portfolios. If you are looking for a good value for money, read on.

Galaxy A80

Where is the camera?

The answer is this video:

Properly speaking, the phone does not need a front camera because the main camera is rotated with a rotating mechanism at the front.

A wipe in the camera application turns on the main camera located at the back of the phone. This pushes the back of the smartphone upward, the main camera rotates in the case 180 degrees, making it a selfie camera. With a second wiper, the camera retracts automatically and returns to the back.

The twist tip has the advantage that a separate front camera is superfluous and that the 48 megapixel main camera is also available for selfies. This is not totally meaningless for selfie friends, as the front camera usually takes much worse pictures than the main camera. Samsung has elegantly solved this problem.

Although expandable and rotating mobile phone cameras are not Samsung's inventions, the combination of the two mechanisms is new, writes the German technology portal heise.de. That the turning mechanism is proving itself in everyday life remains to be demonstrated, Samsung's solution in terms of cameras is certainly exciting.

At least on paper, the 48 MP camera can expect a lot. It has a total of three lenses, the Poträtaufnahmen blurred background (bokeh effect) and allows shooting ultra-wide angle. There is now an integrated 3D depth sensor that optimizes bokeh images for more realistic bokeh images.

On the left a photo of normal mobile phone, on the right an ultra-wide angle shot.

Since Samsung no longer loses room for a front-facing camera, you get a very large, almost frameless, 6.7-inch AMOLED screen. Technically, the Galaxy A80 is only slightly lower than the higher level of the Galaxy S10, more expensive (specifications in the table at the end of the article). It is fast, has a relatively large battery and leaves nothing to be desired with 128 GB of storage plus 8 GB of RAM.

As an operating system, Android 9 is preinstalled with Samsung's new One-UI interface.

Galaxy A70

Unlike the Galaxy A80, the A70 has a normal selfie camera, but has other advantages. Image: samsung

If you can do without the rotating camera of the A80 and prefer a monster battery, the A70 will be at your expense. With the huge 4500 mAh battery, nothing should prevent a two-day battery life.

The A70 is slightly slower than the A80, but it also features a high quality AMOLED display. The dual camera, like the more expensive model, allows wide angle photography and bokeh.

  • Colors: White, Black, Blue, Coral
  • Availability: from April 15th
  • Price: 449 francs

Galaxy A40

For ordinary consumers, the A40 is the ideal choice. Image: samsung

Whoever hears with a little less power is well served by the A40. It has a high-quality AMOLED display and 64GB of memory should be enough for most users, especially since it can be expanded with a microSD card. With the 16 megapixel dual camera, you need to do without the practical ultra-wide angle function.

The fingerprint of the A40 can be unlocked like the more expensive A models, but it does not allow to easily unlock the phone via facial recognition.

  • Colors: White, Black, Blue, Coral
  • Availability: from April 15th
  • Price: 259 francs

Galaxy A20e

The A20e is a little smaller than the more expensive models, so it should fit in the hand. Image: samsung

For Sparfüchse, the A20e is a smartphone to use absolutely every day, whose maximum price is 200 francs. The back of the plastic is perhaps not as noble as glbad, but it is much more stable.

Samsung saved to storage: 32 GB enough here, but it's also the cheapest model, expandable up to 512 GB. If you only use a few apps and do not take thousands of pictures, you can handle internal memory, anyone can buy a microSD card or invest another 60 francs and have access to the A40.

The A20e has a dual camera, a fingerprint scanner and even a fast charge function for the 3000 mAh battery, just enough battery.

  • Colors: White, Black, Blue, Coral
  • Availability: from May 15th
  • Price: 199 francs

Stop lying! This is how the whole world can be supplied with green energy

Climate skeptics and oil lobbyists are wrong: total abandonment of fossil fuels is not only possible, but cheaper in the long run.

According to Zeit Online, there were already scenarios for future energy supply before this study, which could see the results before Friday's publication. The peculiarity lies in the extent of the data on which the LUT study rests:

Unlike others, researchers would not have used annual averages but hourly meteorological data for a sample year. "They could thus check when bottlenecks are threatening and how to compensate for them."

The current global energy mix …
