Gianluca Busio, 16, scored his third consecutive game to save Sporting KC from a 2-2 draw against the visiting New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

Busio scored on a 88th-minute deflection, touching a shot by Graham Zusi who managed to clear his way through a scrum of players following a corner kick. Busio was already the youngest player in MLS history to have scored goals in two consecutive games.

The Red Bulls (1-3-2, 5 points) used the goals of Daniel Royer and Brian White in the second half to take advantage, after changing pace after halftime. But Sporting remained at the attack.

Sporting (2-1-3, 9 points) has been on the front foot for most of the first half. They held the majority of ball possession and had 10 shots (four at goal), versus five (four) for the Red Bulls at intermission.

Johnny Russell scored the SKC on the board in the 24th minute with a superb shot from the left foot tilted slightly behind Red Bulls goaltender Luis Robles. Zusi had a touch of the right side to Krisztian Nemeth, who fed Russell. Russell took a few steps before slipping past Robles.

The Red Bull tied the game in the 52nd minute. They took possession of the ball near the middle of the field and Royer snuck behind Sporting's back line to receive a long ball from Cristian Cbaderes Jr. He stopped the sports goaltender Tim Melia, then threw him into the empty net.

Russell had two golden chances for extra goals, one in each half. After escaping three defenders, he opened the scoring in the 10th minute to the right of the net. Then, in the 63rd minute, he fed Nemeth, who sent him back to Russell. But Russell's attempt was a foot off to the left.

White gave the Red Bull the lead in the 75th minute, three minutes after Bradley Wright-Phillips returned. The white dove goes to the end of a long center of Alejandro Romero Gamarra, pbading the ball past Melia in the farthest corner.

Sunday marked the beginning of a six-week series in which Sporting will play six of the eight league games played on home soil.

Two of the founding members of the MLS, both clubs are even part of the historic 20-20-13 series, including the victory of the SKC in the final of the US Open Cup 2017.
