Three Ghanaian higher education institutions have been ranked among the best in the sub-Saharan region, YEN.com.gh has learned.

These are the University of Ghana, Ashesi University and Accra University of Professional Studies.

The ranking was based on parameters such as the social and economic impact of universities on the basis of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The clbadifications, conducted by the Times Higher Education University, Impact Rankings, are the first global attempt to document evidence of the impact of universities on society, rather than just the performance of research and teaching.

Parameters include university policies on academic freedom, the use of secure employment contracts and their share of management positions, and are based on 11 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Myjoyonline.com reports that the results of the first edition reveal a new hierarchy of various global institutions, compared to rankings focused on research.

Auckland, New Zealand, and two Canadian institutions, McMaster University and the University of British Columbia, were judged the top three.
