May 7, 1989; Cleveland, Ohio: A jumper at the starting line overcomes a ring, crushes a city, raises another, and cements two legends. The first of these is the shooter – MJ himself – who finished the series with five points and 44 points. The other is his shoe, the black and red Air Jordan IV.
Jordan shoes are cool for several reasons. The Air Jordan IV, on arrival, was the coolest of all times – in purely technical terms. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, it was a sleek, racing-like gaming shoe with a lightweight, ventilated mesh nubuck upper.
On the field, shooting in Cleveland confused the shoe with a cold and clinical finish. Off the field, one of history's greatest sneaker marketing campaigns, paired with big cameos, makes it a staple of style.
