Athletics: Eddie Osei-Nketia seduces New Zealand with the selection of world champions

The sensation is at the rendezvous with Edward Osei-Nketia, while New Zealand tentatively chooses the 17-year-old for this year's World Championships in Athletics.

Osei-Nketia has been offered one of the team's nine conditional seats, but still has to earn a fraction of a second more than its best time.

He must also decide if he wants to represent New Zealand or Australia.

Last month, Osei-Nketia won the 100m at the Australian championships, winning the 10.22 win against well-scoring opponents after scoring 10.19 in the semifinals.

To qualify for the Doha World Championships, he must cross the 10.10 mark.

Osei-Nketia is already the fourth Kiwi in his history, behind the father Gus Nketia (10.11 years), Chris Donaldson (10.17 years) and Joseph Millar (10.18 years).

He was born in New Zealand, but grew up across the Tasman. He is therefore eligible to compete for Australia as well. His family still lives in Canberra, but he goes to school in Wellington.

Athletics NZ has already selected Osei-Nketia for the Oceania Championships in June, while Australia wants to choose it for the World Relay Championships in May.

Last month, Osei-Nketia told Newshub that he wanted to run for the country of his birth.

"I was born in New Zealand, my father ran for New Zealand and it's fair to say I want to run for New Zealand," he said.

New Zealand has named nine other athletes who have already achieved the standard, including weight throwers Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill, as well as pole vault star Eliza McCartney.

The nine New Zealand athletes who have met the IAAF entry standard for the IAAF 2019 Doha World Championships are:

Women:

Alana Barber (20 km walk)

Portia Bing (400m hurdles)

Eliza McCartney (pole vault)

Men:

Quentin Rew (20 km walk, 50 km walk)

Jake Robertson (10,000m, marathon)
