BENI, Congo – The Congolese president has said he wants to see a deadly Ebola outbreak in less than three months, even as some health experts say it could take twice as long.
President Felix Tshisekedi visited Tuesday in eastern Congo, where this epidemic has become the deadliest in history. The Congolese Ministry of Health said that more than 1,200 cases had been confirmed, including more than 800 deaths.
The visit to Tshisekedi took place a few days after the World Health Organization decided that the epidemic was not yet a global health emergency.
The epidemic is occurring in an unstable area near the border with Rwanda and Uganda where rebel groups and community resistance have complicated efforts to contain hemorrhagic fever.
As of this week, more than 100,000 people have received an experimental but effective Ebola vaccine.
