An Oregon mother may have saved the life of her 2-year-old daughter when she saw a gleam in her eyes when she looked at an old photo.
"I knew something was wrong with Gracie because her eye would be glowing and it seemed like she was having a lazy eye," said Elly Smith, of Oregon, in Fox News.
The mother then made an appointment for her daughter, who is now 5 years old.

In May 2016, doctors spotted several tumors in the girl's eye, diagnosing her with retinoblastoma.
The American Cancer Society says that cancer starts in the retina and is quite rare.

"Retinoblastoma is a cancer that originates in the retina, the backmost part of the eye," says the organization on its website. "It's the type of eye cancer most prevalent in children. Rarely, children may have other types of eye cancer, such as medulloepithelioma, briefly described below, or ocular melanoma (ocular). "
According to his mother, ophthalmologists in Philadelphia consulted Gracie and told him that his eye should be completely removed and provided with a prosthesis.
In June 2016, the girl underwent eye-removal surgery and started chemotherapy a few weeks later. Months later, she had a prosthetic eye.

"Gracie was in agreement with that," Smith said, quoted by Fox. She added that Gracie had since completely recovered.

Unusual glow
Smith described seeing the unusual glow in his daughter's eyes on a photo.
"I knew something was wrong with Gracie because her eye would be glowing and it looked like she had a lazy eye," she said, according to Survivornet.

"When we left, I remember walking towards the car crying and shaking and tying Gracie in the car seat without knowing what I was going to do. I said to Gracie, "Anyway, it's okay," she said on the website.
The girl also had to wait a while before receiving her prosthetic eye.
