Government announces plans to train youth to repair streetlights

The Minister of Youth and Sports announced that his team will soon be presenting a program to train young people to repair broken street lights across the country.

Isaac Asiamah told the Public Accounts Committee [PAC] Joseph Opoke Gapo said the program's goal is to create jobs for young people and brighten the dark streets.

"What I observed was that we buy these street lights all the time but, for lack of maintenance, they go out after a few months. And this evolution concerns everyone, including members of Parliament and district leaders. So we are undertaking a project to train young people in the repair and maintenance of lampposts throughout the country, "Asiama told PAC.

The Minister of Youth and Sports attended the PAC meeting to respond to questions in the 2016 Auditor General's Report, which included why the construction of the National Youth Authority Headquarters complex has been stuck for many years.

Between January 2017 and March 2018, the government facilitated the creation of 1,096,404 jobs in the public and private sectors of the economy, said the Minister of Employment in May 2018 at the launch of the Nation Builders Body (NABCO) in Kumasi.
