MORGANTOWN, WV- (WTAP) A study from West Virginia University shows just how much the addiction crisis has affected the Mountain State.
The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, and conducted by WVU researchers, indicates that fentanyl deaths have increased by 122% between 2015 and 2017.
This compares to deaths from fentanyl in the previous 10 years.
The researchers cite an increase in fentanyl imports from China and the strength of fentanyl itself to explain the increase in the number of deaths.
They add that the amount of fentanyl sold in the street varies considerably and can be mixed with other substances.
The WVU School of Public Health says that unlike fentanyl, prescription opioids have played a role in 75% fewer deaths between 2015 and 2017 than in the previous 10 years.
