The Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Kitack Lim, visited Ghana's Ports and Harbors Authority as part of his three-day visit to Ghana.

Kitack Lim, who has been Secretary General of the IMO since 2016, said that he had always wished to visit the port of Tema.

He stated that he was impressed by the dynamics of the activities at the port and that he was happy to follow the direction taken by Tema Port.

"As I approached the port, I saw some very dynamic activities in the port of Tema. I feel that the people of Ghana are strong, motivated and engaged. So I think the port of Tema is one of the active industrial zones of Ghana, "he said.

He was received by the two directors of Takoradi and Tema Ports, Captain Ebenezer Afadzi and Sandra Opoku, respectively.

Captain Ebenezer Afadzi, Director of Takoradi Port, briefed the Secretary-General on the important progress Ghanaian ports have made to make Ghana a commercial and logistical hub in the subregion, whose port expansion plans are Of paramount importance.

The Secretary-General has expressed some concerns regarding port terminal operations.

The port manager of Takoradi explained that GPHA as well as its private operator partners had shared responsibilities up to now with regards to the operation of the port.

"As we speak, we manage containers and they manage them as well; these are not 100% container operations for the dealer, we are also part of it. But before they came on board, we did it ourselves and in the port of Takoradi, we do everything ourselves. "

The Secretary General of IMO was pleased to hear that the GPHA has a number of staff members at the World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden, and shared a photo with the alumni.

A traditional wall artifact has been introduced at Kitack Lim to oversee the productive global maritime sector.
