Case of confirmed rabies in Gaston County

GASTON COUNTY, N.-C. – On Saturday, April 14, the Animal Care and Enforcement Division of the Gaston County Police received a call in which one person reported that his dog had killed a raccoon.

The call was launched by a citizen of block 800 district of Unity Church Road.

The animal care and law enforcement specialists investigated, seized the raccoon and treated it for it to be tested for rabies.

The raccoon was sent to the Raleigh NC Public Health Laboratory and tested positive for rabies.

Animal care and law enforcement specialists began to survey the area where the animal was, to inform residents and to check for rabies vaccination.

Officials emphasized the importance of vaccinating all pets against rabies, both for the health and safety of these animals and for the health and safety of the community.
