Paris – The legend of French cinema Agnes Varda, who died last month, is the star of the Cannes Film Festival this year unveiled Monday, perched on the back of one of its technicians.
The ever-playful director – who died on March 29 at the age of 90 – is photographed standing on the back of one of her squat male crew members to get a picture of her film "The Short Point".
The striking image could even be interpreted as an insightful commentary on how the industry finally bends to women's will after the #MeToo move.
Last year, little Varda and Hollywood star, Cate Blanchett, led a rally on the red carpet at the festival, calling for gender equality.
The director invented the French New Wave with "La Pointe Courte" in 1955, which was filmed on the fly and inexpensively in the Mediterranean port of Sète, where she grew up.
"Like a manifesto, this still photo sums up everything about Agnes Varda," the festival said. "His pbadion, his confidence and his mischief.
"Perched on the shoulders of an impbadive technician, clinging to a camera … a 26-year-old woman is doing her first film," adds the text.
The film, starring Philippe Noiret, was screened in Cannes and helped spark one of the most influential movements in the history of cinema.
A spokeswoman for the festival told AFP that the identity of the technician remained a mystery.
Varda, who then married fellow countryman Jacques Demy – the creators of "Lola" and "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" – then won the Golden Lion in Venice for "Vagabond" and was acclaimed by all for his now clbadic documentary, "The Glaneurs and Me".
Last year, she became the oldest person to be nominated for an Oscar for another documentary, "Faces Places", after winning an honorary Oscar for her career.
She received an Honorary Gold Award in Cannes in 2015.
The biggest film festival in the world, which sees itself as the "Olympic Games of Cinema", will open next month with "The Dead Don & # 39; t Die" by cult American director Jim Jarmusch.
The zombie comedy stars Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton and singers Iggy Pop and Tom Waits.
The festival, whose jury is this year chaired by Mexican maestro Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, famous for "Birdman" and "The Revenant", will be held from May 14th to May 25th. – AFP
