The staff of the Mövenpick Ambbadador Hotel in Accra has deposited its tools as a protest against what they describe as a racist treatment inflicted by the hotel management.

According to them, the unfair treatment has persisted since 2011.

The staff, which numbered about 100 people, camped Wednesday afternoon at the hotel reception, camping amidst drums and war songs.

They insisted that they would not return to their position until the hotel's general manager, Michael Rathgeb – whom they accused of having overseen the racist treatment, be sacked.

Abandoned hotel guests without staff to help them joined the media to attend the event.

Some Graphic Online staff claimed that Ghanaian workers were severely treated and fired by the hotel when they committed crimes such as "stealing pens", while expatriate employees were released when They stole guests.

They also claimed that an expatriate employee who had stolen gold bullion from a guest remains an employee of the hotel even after her arrest by the police.

The general manager of Movenpick, Mr. Rathgeb, who was standing at the entrance to the hotel, declined to comment when Kweku Zurek of Graphic Online approached him.

Three policemen in uniform [pictured above] arrived at the scene later and began discussions with angry workers in the hotel lobby.
