The 4th Annual Hackathon Conference organized by the Hacklab Foundation and Stanbic Bank is scheduled to take place this Friday, April 19 – Saturday, January 21 at the Great Hall of Kumasi University of Science and Technology Kwame Nkrumah with more 600 students in development. 18 higher education institutions that are expected to participate.
According to Patrick Quantson, Digital Projects Manager at Stanbic Bank, this year's conference will focus on the following theme: "Can Blockchain Technology Transform Ghana's Services Sector?"
According to him, the Hacklab Foundation chooses a theme based on trend discussions / technological issues that need to be addressed from the ground up, as they are stakeholders in all the high-level decisions made at the level of governments and enterprises.
"This year, they will discuss and develop solutions using plausible and scalable blockchain technology packages tailored to the Ghanaian and African markets.
We hope that Ghanaian entrepreneurs will take advantage of this situation and make a quantum leap in creating infrastructure that will take a long time, breaking down barriers to the transition, "he said.
The Hackathon Challenge will require participants to develop solutions to issues in the education, agriculture, energy, tax, financial services, health care, transportation and logistics sectors. using Blockchain technology.
Participation in the hackathon has increased exponentially over the years since 2015. Approximately 450 student developers participated in the 2016 hackathon and 112 projects were launched. These projects include the blockchain e-voting solution that won first place, a virtual reality advertising system, a participatory agriculture solution, a crowdfunding platform and a virtual nutritionist using artificial intelligence.
In 2017, 15 trainees were recruited on the hackathon to join Stanbic's digital transformation team. They have contributed to the development of epics such as Enhanced Virtual Assistance (EVA), developed the #SBIncubator website, and welcome emailers to welcome new customers.
There are many opportunities for participants, including 10 award categories with a total of 12,000.00 GHC in cash to be won, on-site internships, job hires and investment opportunities to adapt solutions from hackathon.
Other benefits will also be awarded to winning teams, including IBM Cloud, Google Cloud, RingCaptcha credits, branding opportunities for the top 10 teams, and more. Winning teams will also have the opportunity to participate in the Hacklab-GSBS Start-up School, a 6-week pre-incubation program to further develop their solutions.
