A listeriosis outbreak has hospitalized at least eight people in the United States and killed one.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that listeria infections have been reported in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York State.
According to the CDC, people who became ill ate different types of cold cuts, including meat and cheese.
Listeria was identified in samples taken from several stores, but officials did not specify who had supplied the affected meat products.
Symptoms of listeria infection include muscle pain, diarrhea, fever, headache, confusion, and seizures.
It can be treated with antibiotics, but is of particular concern to pregnant women because it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
Elderly people and those with weakened immune systems are also at risk.
