The government is committing resources in the fisheries sector to increase fish production in the country and reduce fish imports.
These include a Chinese grant of US $ 50 million for the construction of the James Town Fishing Port Complex and the first phase of the Anomabo Fisheries College, which should be completed by the end of this year. of 2019.
Others are the supply of outboard motors, the supply of inputs to fishermen at a subsidized rate, an ice-making plant and a cold storage facility with a daily capacity of three tonnes and prudent management of premixed fuel.
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Elizabeth Aforley Quaye, said Tuesday that the government is determined to quickly transform the fishing sector.
Ms. Aforley Quaye said that the establishment of an interdepartmental committee consisting of the Ministries of Energy, Fisheries Development and Aquaculture, Finance, National Authority Ghana Petroleum and the National Premix Fuels Committee, which has been able to prevent the diversion of premix fuel.
The measures put in place by the Interdepartmental Committee reduced the number of Landing Beach committees from 475 to 286, while daily and monthly record books were introduced for record keeping and accountability for the sale of the product. . The measures allowed the country to save 36 million GHC.
To reduce youth unemployment, the Ministry has launched a program called Aquaculture for Food and Employment, which is expected to create 80,000 direct and indirect jobs along the aquaculture value chain and provide 50 000 additional tonnes of fish over a period of three years.
She said the program would train 2000 Nation Builders Corp (NABCO) youth to provide extension services to fish farmers.
On health, she said three fish health laboratories had been rehabilitated and 23 fish health surveillance exercises had been conducted to prevent the killing of fish.
