Manchester United coaches Solskjaer and Mike Phelan agree on a change in transfer recruitment
Mike Phelan advises Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the transfer plans for Manchester United's summer as the club prepares for a new rebuild.
Solskjaer and Phelan talked about recruiting players who embody the "united way" of playing in a shift strategy focused on younger targets. United opted for a preference for young British talent after the split transfer strategy developed by former director Jose Mourinho.
The MEN understands that Phelan would prefer to revive the recruiting policy and renounce the superstar strategy on which United has relied for much of Ed Woodward's term as Executive Vice President. It is thought that Solskjaer is in agreement with Phelan's prospects and there is a willingness to recruit without blocking the way from the academy's talents to the first team.
Phelan has still not been installed as a full-time badistant director at United, but Solskjaer continues on this badumption. Phelan will stay at the club beyond the summer. United sources said the day of Solskjaer's full-time appointment to Phelan, who is still under contract with the Central League Mariners division as sports director, to stay at Old Trafford. Solskjaer does not want Phelan to badume the inaugural role of Technical Director.
United wants "decisive" goals that could make a difference for the first team, as opposed to potential players or team players, and have verbally promised at least three signatures. United considers striker Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund an ideal acquisition because of his age and his prowess on the right flank, which United has not strengthened since Wilfried Zaha became the last member of Sir Alex Ferguson's staff in January 2013.
