(CNN) – Sleepy drivers are a bigger problem than you probably think. They put not only their lives in danger, but also everyone on the road.
Drowsy driving is responsible for about 86,000 accidents each year. According to the CDC, about 1 in 25 adults said they have fallen asleep while driving in the past 30 days.
A new study by the AAA Foundation for Road Safety found that sleepy drivers are a bigger risk than expected.
Accidents are three times greater during the night, where drowsiness was a factor.
"Similar to alcoholic intoxication," said Dr. Gholam Motamedi, of Georgetown University Hospital. "Your reflexes and responses and the speed of data processing will be slower."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in 25 adult drivers reported being asleep at the wheel in the past 30 days.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drowsy driving is responsible each year for about 83,000 collisions – 37,000 injured – and nearly 900 fatalities.
If you are on the road, be sure to recognize the signs of drowsiness while driving.
- Yawning or flashing frequently.
- Miss your exit.
- Deriving from your path.
If you think you are too tired to drive, you are probably. So, stop.
Better yet, do not get behind the wheel to start.
