The world number one, Novak Djokovic, suffered a 6-3 4-6 6-2 exit in the quarter-finals against Russia's Daniil Medvedev at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The 31-year-old, winner of the event in 2013 and 2015, lost to world number 14 in two hours and 20 minutes.
Medvedev will face another Serb in the last four games, the world number 48 Dusan Lajovic.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal, who was looking for his 12th title at Monte Carlo, went from 4 to 1 to defeat World No. 35 Guido Pella 7-6 (7-1) 6-3.
Djokovic, who won a seventh record of the Australian Open in January, lost in the third round at Indian Wells and fourth in Miami last month.
