Engineering work on the west coast main track is expected to cause severe disruption to railway pbadengers during the weekend of Easter holiday.
The Shawfield Junction, south of Glasgow, receives a £ 4 million signal and an upgrade to the runway which will be completed only on Tuesday morning.
Pbadengers traveling between Scotland and the north of England will be concerned.
Network Rail admitted that the work would cause disruption, but said that a short-term line closure was inevitable.
National Rail has stated that travel times to or from Scotland could be considerably lengthened during the weekend of the holiday.
There is no train service north of Lancaster, which means that replacement coaches will be put into service between Glasgow and northern England on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
In addition, the closure of London Euston Station requires pbadengers to change service to the English capital.
Virgin Trains recommended pbadengers to avoid traveling.
Donald Morris, Head of Network Rail's Infrastructure Projects Program, said, "Our engineers will work hard to bring this complex program to completion as quickly as possible for the pbadengers.
"The west coast mainline plays a key role in the country's economic life – carrying pbadengers and freight – and this work will help improve its reliability.
"We understand the disadvantages that this work could cause to some pbadengers and residents, but such an investment in the railroad can not be achieved without a short-term line closure."
Farther south, on the main west coast line, engineers will also be working between Beattock and Abington in South Lanarkshire.
