Review of ECQF Game 5: Toronto Maple Leafs 2 against Boston Bruins 1

Three down, one to go.

Your game on ten:

1. Having reached the point of the series where the two teams are now fully integrated into their own game / structure and the other team's tendencies, this is the kind of game the Leafs needed to prove they could win in this series – a 0-0 battle that stayed in this way in the third period and was played with absolutely no space available.

They owned the puck more than 60% in the first two periods but had nothing to show. They had to remove three penalties (and they had none) in the first 40 minutes despite the decisive victory over this possession (a horrible call to Hyman, an automatic call to delay the game on Marner and a deserved hanging) hands call Marleau). There was a certain youthful feeling in watching them fight their way through this game, staying patient with him and finding a way to win a huge playoff game on the road.

2 After putting themselves in Game 4, the Leafs started playing fast and smartly – playing safely behind the Bruins all night with a smart chip and running, running a lot of short breakaways, knowing when to live fight another day with an original game and generally handle the puck and the game very well.

Without the puck, they put honey on the neutral zone with clever peaks, subtle bypbades and interference games and well defended in five-man units with good spreads and good sticks all night long. . When they play so tight, it's fuel that feeds their transition game.

3 We did not really see the Leafs playing that kind of hockey on a regular basis until about two weeks ago in November. It's remarkable to see how the Leafs rocked the switch here in the playoffs, but it does testify to the maturation of the young core, the work of the coaching staff, the health of the team that meets at the right time (relatively speaking), of the purchase. -in players, and exactly the right kind of addition to the trade at the blue line in Jake Muzzin. Do not fall behind on yourself, know that the throw-in game – especially against a good, experienced team – is always the hardest, but the Leafs have put themselves in the driver's seat now and for me have clearly been the best team at 5v5 in four of the five games.

4 Was quite surprised by the number of consensus on the "missed" call of the goalkeeper interference of different commentators on different broadcast streams. I do not think Hyman's contact materially changed Rask's positioning or his ability to break through the game, and the slightest glance took place just outside the line of fire. The point about the lack of consistency of these calls throughout the year is clearly valid, however.

We finally have the icebreaker. Hyman takes a shot and Matthews hits him in the slot. 1-0 Leafs. #LeafsForever pic.twitter.com/Fm7bQUb23e

5. Another sign of the team's maturation – in addition to the start of the steady, calm game in which she only allowed one shot in nine minutes on the road – is the way she handled the climb 1-0 while the Bruins were putting pressure. The Leafs, although they have had an uneven regular season, have always been a big team in the leader's possession because they are very effective against punches as teams start playing against them. But it was a different kind of calm shown here.

the Kasperi Kapanen The goal begins with a loose faceoff by Matthews and the Leafs, but the Leafs did not run on the team. Matthews closed and helped force the puck against the wall, and when Hainsey recovered the puck on the other side, Matthews approached and was five feet away from the small hurdle that was pbading on the boards. . Morgan Rielly immediately recognized the opportunity to take off as the Bruins were caught three deep, and a few pbades later, it was at the back of the Kapanen stick net.

Kasperi Kapanen finally wins the snide. What a game of three pbades in transition. 2-0 Leafs. #LeafsForever pic.twitter.com/950ecUTEPe

It was a manual counterweight. Rielly did something clever to end the race by dragging a Bruin with him, which caused hesitation to know who to pick up.

6 Speaking of the beginning of the team, I thought it was interesting to note that the last time the Bruins started in the fourth row against the top of the Toronto standings in the second game, Babbad told them makes the ice leave the pursuit of the good match. That was not the reason the Leafs got off to a bad start in this game, but I do not think it helped. This time, he just let it roll.

In fact, Babbad did not continue this game deep all night. He seems reasonably confident in the way his first two lines are playing more than 200 feet and as long as he can get a Tavares or Muzzin lines against the Bergeron line down the road, he's pretty comfortable with that.

7. Effectively, Auston Matthews rewarded this faith of Babbad with an amazing game. He split his time between the first two lines fairly regularly, but he actually saw Marchand and Bergeron being the best of the two Bruins forwards. In the six minutes 5-5, his line was more than 80% FC.

After the way Matthews fought, beat (some great battles with Chara), and supported the defense both by spotting and offering a close point of support in the middle of the breakthrough, his decisive goal was a just reward for one night to do everything right away from the puck. It sounded like a superstar match for players who faced a ton of criticism for their performance in this building the previous spring.

(And it must be said that the fact that Tavares neutralized Bergeron by imposing it mainly in decisive games in this match allowed Matthews to get a foothold in the series.

8. The effort of Zach Hyman in this game. He made another big defeat in the boards and he's clearly not 100%, but he never missed a shift and went on to win the battle after the test against the team against 5 and on the penalty. He executed the chip and chased behind the Bruins 'defense effectively all night, and his strength on the puck to hold his ground and stand up paved the way for Matthews' goal. Of course, he went straight to the net to park just above Rask afterwards. He also explained to Chara throughout this series that he did not retreat a moment; he will continue to come and come. He was absolutely relentless from the first match.

He also rocked Backes very well here:

9 Jake Gardiner12:31 ice time was the lowest in the series (and playoff career); he skated away from a hit on the end boards so delicately at one point, I thought that this change could be the last one. Again, this shows how much the addition of Muzzin has been mbadive. He always has something to offer to the offensive blue line and, instead of his usual agility and his avoidance against failed chess, he was quite smart and adaptable to the way he avoided / spun checks and made quickly advance the puck. he finished the night with 66% of FC. That said, he has also started a pizza in the middle of the defense zone tonight. He's doing well, but it's hard to watch a guy fight the pain that way, and that's not the type of injury that's going to get better by playing more hockey games in the playoffs, that's for sure. Congratulations to him for defeating him.

ten. Notable how Frederik Andersen does not have to be one of the best Leafs players in this game; he just needed to be solid. The Bruins only generated 18 shots on goal at 5v5 and five chances of great danger. They have run out of answers and the fact that the Leafs have won a game without Andersen as one of their best players – I would put Matthews, Hyman and Muzzin in the top spot of the three stars – is a very encouraging sign for the management, the Leafs team's defense is in vogue.
