Pakistan and Afghanistan have decided to declare mandatory the possession of a polio protection card for people crossing the Durand line.

Sources said the decision was made at the government level to control the polio virus. All Afghan nationals would be vaccinated against polio upon arrival in Pakistan, they said.

Poliomyelitis cards will be issued to Afghans after proper vaccination, they added. They said that without the polio card, Afghans could not enter Pakistan, a private television channel reported on Saturday.

Sources said that the validity of the polio vaccination book for Afghan nationals would be one year. They said the polio vaccination would take place at the gates of Torkhan and Pak-Afghan, Dosti.

Sources said people over the age of 10 would receive a polio vaccine card, while those under the age of 10 would be vaccinated each time they entered.

Sources said special teams were stationed in Torkham and the Pakistani Dosti Gate.

On April 18, the poliomyelitis eradication program confirmed the presence of active polio virus in the wastewater of 12 major cities of the country.

According to the details, polio P-1 virus has been found in wastewater from 12 major cities, including Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Bannu, Mardan, Waziristan, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Shahdadkot.

Sources familiar with the development had indicated that while keeping the situation alarming, the authorities decided to extend from 5 to 10 years the age of administration of polio drops.
