We all know that exercise has many benefits to help treat high blood pressure and even protect against Alzheimer's disease. Now, a new study shows that the time of the day when the workouts take place could play a key role for patients with metabolic disorders.
Researchers at the University of California at Irvine discovered that exercise in the morning rather than in the evening offered metabolic benefits.
"With the help of mice, we compared the impact of exercise on skeletal muscle metabolism at different times of the day," said Paolo Sbadone-Corsi, PhD, Professor Donald Bren. and Director of the Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism at the UCI School of Medicine.
"We found that exercising at the correct time, around mid-morning, caused an increase in oxygen in the cells and a more rejuvenating effect on the body."
It was already known that the timing of food intake played a crucial role in moderating the metabolism, but the effect of the timing of exercise was still mysterious.
"Exercise stimulates metabolism, resulting in improved metabolic health." While the metabolic benefits of exercise have been largely uncovered, the question of when it's appropriate to exercise has remained virtually unexplored, "said Sbadone-Corsi.
The team explored high-throughput transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches to identify changes in mouse metabolism that occurred during morning or evening exercise. They discovered that morning impact exercise increased the use of carbohydrates and ketone bodies, as well as the breakdown of fats and amino acids.
"Our results clearly indicate that the time of day is a critical factor for amplifying the beneficial impact of exercise on both metabolic pathways within skeletal muscle and systemic energy homeostasis. "said Sbadone-Corsi.
